Love Notes: Sounds in the Park
Have you ever slowed down to hear sounds in the park? What do we hear when we compare urban sounds to nature ones?
This week, I've been committing to a short walk in the park every day. Lately I'm really interested in learning bird sounds, after I realized that a squirrel can sound like a bird, but it is not a bird.
As I paid attention to the sounds around me, both urban and natural, I noticed that the park is very noisy. Bird songs are often drowned out by human activity.
🍃Today's Field Notes
Thrumming of the driver in the lawn mower automobile buzzcutting grass
Beep, beep, beep as the construction vehicles go in reverse at the defunct public pool
Hummingbirds screech a territorial song as they divebomb into the trees. These are the sounds I notice, as well as the cheer-choo of the House Finch.
There are squirrels that rustle through the trees, some of them perch on high-up branches singing a warning call to passerbys on the near by path. "Stay away, stay away, this is my branch," they say in their best opera voice.
"Dada-dada-da" yells a baby from their stroller, babbling. A black phoebe perched high up from its electric pole perch skitters and flutters from the pole and back again, startled by the baby's gleeful sounds.
